Moons and Junes - Bras without the bullshit

Moons and Junes - Bras without the bullshit

We love us some lingerie that makes us feel sexy and fierce.  But does sexy also = pain and discomfort? We are SO over suffering for sexiness because we know we can feel and look great without that bullshit... ...which is exactly why lingerie brand Moons and Junes spoke to us.  The brand is all about creating lingerie that accentuates and celebrates our curves, working with them rather than against them which is what so many of us have become used to.Their no B.S. attitude also extends to their ad campaigns which embrace diversity and wait for it; no photoshop! Hallelujah!  It's this refreshing take on lingerie with its emphasis on feeling confident that we absolutely love so we couldn't be happier to have the Moons and Junes range in store - we know you're gonna love it!We recently chatted to the brand founder, Agnete, to find out more about how Moons and Junes came to be... First of all we wanted to start by saying that we are really excited to be stocking the Moons and Junes range at ISLA! For those new to the brand, can you tell us a bit about what inspired you to create an intimates range?Yes of course, and thank you so much! We’re incredibly excited to have ISLA as one of our retailers! Hm…it’s becoming increasingly clear to me that Moons and Junes is a direct result of my own insecurities. Thinking back on my teen years, I (like oh so many others) suffered from low self-esteem and body insecurities. I continuously found myself compromising with myself in order to fit into the socially constructed ideal of beauty. In the midst of my should-I-get-implants phase, I was fortunate enough to take part in a two-year educational program called the United World College (UWC). UWC brings 300 high school students from 95 different countries together. It was a real melting pot of nationality, culture, race, and sexuality. Arriving there as a white, cis, straight, teenage Westerner, it was something of an eye-opener, to put it mildly. Surrounded by bodies of all shapes, colors, and inclinations (yes, we had communal showers), I learned to appreciate the individual beauty each and every one of us embodied. Moons and Junes was born as a celebration of this beauty in diversity.   It was also at this time I started noticing that a lot of my underwear encouraged me to ‘change’ my physical appearance. My bras made by breasts appear bigger, firmer and rounder. I hated it.  On top of that I had a lump surgically removed from my left breasts as the underwire had wrecked havoc over the years, which had created inflammation in my tissue. This is when I noticed how difficult it was to find intimates that were truly comfortable, that didn’t distort my look, that didn’t dig into my skin, that didn’t change my body.  I needed something that put emphasis on my own curves rather than creating 'new' ones, you know? Something that celebrated my individuality, rather than trying to change me.  And so I decided to build my own. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Moons and Junes (@moonsandjunesofficial) on Jan 11, 2020 at 5:36am PST The homepage of your website definitely sets the tone for what customers can expect from you by saying ‘No underwire. No padding. No bullshit.’ Amen to that! It’s so refreshing to see it laid out in such a clear cut, no nonsense way.  Do you think that attitude has helped get you to where you are today and what sets you apart from other lingerie brands?Hm, that’s an interesting question! I think we’re at a time where people are craving something real. We’re tired of having been fed bullshit by male-run lingerie brands, sexualizing our bodies and promoting oppressive standards of beauty, that have somehow managed to become the social norm.  I mean, when we ask why people strive to look a certain way, it becomes fairly obvious that inclusivity is not just about “self-love”, it’s about recognizing oppressive behaviours. That’s why representation is so important: dark, fair, young, old, slim or not, cis or not.  I think it's important that we take responsibility for the beauty-related mandates we promote.    We as consumers are a lot smarter than corporations have made us out to be. We know what we want, and we’re tired of fake shit. As I build MJ,  it is simply a matter of listening and being authentic. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Moons and Junes (@moonsandjunesofficial) on May 25, 2019 at 1:41pm PDT We love that you seem to really value and nurture the connections you have with the Moons and Junes online community through your blog, #bitsandboobs and the diary entries on your website.  Was that something you always intended as part of your vision or has it been something that has evolved organically? Haha, #bitsandboobs actually came long before the brand. When I struggled with my breasts, and I thought my perception of them would improve if I was exposed to more ‘real’ breasts. So I hit up acquaintances/friends to ask them if they wanted to help me out by sending me a picture of their chests. I can’t believe so many of them sent me pictures, it was amazing! And so when Moons and Junes came along, I knew I couldn’t keep all that gold to myself. #bitsandboobs aims at normalizing lumps and bumps by creating a collection of boobs from all over the world. Moons and Junes was never intended to be ‘just’ a product. I always dreamed of us becoming a community, a judgement free zone that could provide your daily dose of realism. And we couldn’t have built any of this if it wasn't for our customers/followers and the incredible support they continuously give us. We currently have a platform where 80% of our content is user generated and where word of mouth is our only advertisement. Instagram (@moonsandjunesofficial)  is a direct communication channel for us to learn who our customers are, what they want - we simply have to listen and provide. Through our Instagram we learned what our community want from their underwear and where we could improve. We’ve been in touch with more than 50 women who’ve helped us out with focus groups and fittings! It’s because of all this assistance and feedback that our new product line has wider straps, larger cups, and I would never have come up with the cute high-waisted pair of briefs on my own.   With beauty being such a constant focus in both media and society as a whole, has it been difficult to try and shift the perception that we must suffer for beauty to the realisation that comfort can also be sexy and beautiful?Yes and no. At the beginning we faced a decent amount of lot of backlash, as multiple bigger corporations thought we were too controversial (how) to work with. But once we found our first customers, who saw our approach as refreshing and who already believed that ‘comfort can be beautiful’, things took a life of their own.  We became a part of a much larger movement happening among women and femme. One that is much greater than any individual or company, and that is gaining ground every single day. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Moons and Junes (@moonsandjunesofficial) on May 5, 2019 at 1:43am PDT Moons and Junes feels like a very open and honest range which, in a world often dominated by a fair amount of bullshit, is hard to come by.  If you could leave a lasting impression on each person that wears your lingerie, what would you hope it to be?Life is hard enough as is it. We’re taught that every accomplishment comes with a struggle. And damn it we struggle a lot! There are so many things that are difficult and uncomfortable. Underwear shouldn't be one of them. That’s it.  I hope people wear them on a sexy Friday night, on a lazy Sunday morning, during important meetings, when practicing yoga, when they see their therapist, when breastfeeding… haha – point being: there are no rules to wearing Moons And Junes. No who, no where, no when.   View this post on Instagram A post shared by Moons and Junes (@moonsandjunesofficial) on Oct 28, 2019 at 3:25am PDT We feel really fortunate to be carrying Moons and Junes at our store in Berlin!  Are you selective about your retailers and what drew you to ISLA?Thank you, we’re incredibly excited about this collaboration too! And to answer your question, yes, we’re definitely nit-picky! We work hard to find partners that align with our values, that have character and that are cool. It’s like going on a first date - was there god chemistry? ISLA had us at hello! It is such a pearl with a strong, fun and quirky aesthetic - we just had to be a part of it!    You launched the brand in 2016 and it seems to be going from strength to strength which is fantastic.  How do you see it evolving over the next year, any exciting plans for 2020…? Our biggest focus is the launch of our long awaited collection, UNAPOLOGETIC. We're launching it on the 8th of March and can't wait to get it out into the world! This collection is different from anything we’ve ever done before, which is nerve-wrecking - in a good way.  It explicitly celebrates female and femme sexuality in all its forms by focusing on the individual. We’re very excited about it. Get your hands on the Moons and Junes range here or come see us in store! Written by Hazel Hedges.

Nail Trends: Checking out the Virgin Manicure

Nail Trends: Checking out the Virgin Manicure

Now don't get us wrong, we love a colourful, bejewelled nail but every now and then we like to mix it up.  Step forward the 'Virgin Manicure' straight outta Kyiv... With less of a focus on bold colour and more on fine lines and geometric designs, it's simplicity is what makes it unique.  Usually with a nude or barely there base, the look has a pure and innocent quality so it's no wonder it's become known as the 'Virgin Manicure'.    ISLA recently travelled to the Ukrainian capital and headed straight to nail salon MVK to discuss the inspo behind the looks and of course get our nails did!  We met with Yulia, one of the nail artists behind the trend and questioned her on why she thinks it has become so popular with her clients.'The designs are almost tattoo-like - minimalistic, stylish and natural' says Yulia. We totally agree and love them for their amazing detail and for being super chic!    View this post on Instagram A post shared by 𝐘𝐔𝐋𝐈𝐈𝐀 𝐒𝐓𝐄𝐓𝐒𝐈𝐔𝐊 (@mrs_yuli) on Oct 1, 2019 at 10:00am PDT Yulia used to be an engineer which explains her love of lines and geometric patterns which she creates using her tool kit of pens, sticky tape and an airbrush.  She takes inspiration from graphic art and looks to nail artists like Unistella and others from South Korea and Japan who she sees as the lead trendsetters in the industry.  View this post on Instagram A post shared by MVK (@mvk.ua) on Jan 10, 2020 at 9:52am PST View this post on Instagram A post shared by 𝐘𝐔𝐋𝐈𝐈𝐀 𝐒𝐓𝐄𝐓𝐒𝐈𝐔𝐊 (@mrs_yuli) on Jan 21, 2020 at 12:59am PST When asked if MVK clients usually know what they want, she told us they often give her complete freedom to create whatever she wants - dream customer right?! Nike Air Max 90 30th Anniversary - They're coming in Pink!

Nike Air Max 90 30th Anniversary - They're coming in Pink!

Do these sneakers really need an introduction...? We didn't think so either! Nike's Air Max 90 is an absolute classic and to mark it's 30th anniversary this month, Nike has launched the style in this gorgeous rose pink colour which has just landed at ISLA! So what do we know about this already iconic shoe? When it first broke out onto the scene in 1990, one of it's most eye-catching features was it's unique Infrared colourway which instantly set it apart from any previous models.  The 'Air' concept itself was nothing new as Nike had already been creating it for other sneakers since the late 70's, but the AM 90 featured the instantly recognisable chunky heel and window for the air bubble which wasn't repeated in later Air Max designs. The AM 90 not only gained a following amongst runners for it's comfort and practicality, but also amongst the skateboarding community and street fashion scene for it's versatility and effortless style.  It's for these reasons why we believe the Nike Air Max 90 is here to stay!     The Nike Air Max 90 is bold, stylish, and a risk taker - all qualities we love and admire within a shoe which is why ISLA couldn't be more excited to be bringing you this super cool design! This new colour way has just hit our store and will no doubt be in high demand as it's a limited run, so we suggest getting your hands on them soon cuz once they're gone, they're gone! What better way to slay your way into 2020 than wearing these badass kickz, are we right?!DON'T MISS OUT!Get your hands on them at the ISLA store or online HERE.  Written by Hazel Hedges.

Isn't it time we talked about... ghosting?

Isn't it time we talked about... ghosting?

Ghosting. We all know someone, or are someone who’s been ghosted. Heck, we’re all probably someone who’s done the dirty and done a little ghosting of our own.A buzzword for millennials and gen z’ers in recent years, ghosting is an unavoidable hurdle in the 21st century dating scene. In fact, a recent study from the online dating site Plenty of Fish, found that almost 80% of millennial daters between 18-33 have been ghosted. But why exactly do we do it and what are the consequences?Online dating apps like Tinder, Bumble, and Grindr have made meeting and connecting with new people easier than ever before. Fancy a 2am hookup? Easy. Wanna go for a cute coffee date? No problem. In saying that, the ability to essentially date someone through a screen, combined with our ever growing dependency on our phones when it comes to communication, has led to the rise and rise of the aforementioned ghosting culture. The bottom line of ghosting is that it’s easy. It’s a get-out-of-jail-free card. Don’t wanna see someone again? Just don’t text them back. Simple, right? When we ghost someone, we often like to claim that our actions are an attempt to ‘save their feelings’. But let’s be real, we’re kidding ourselves when we say that ghosting is anything other than a selfish move to avoid the emotional labour of having to deal with some kind of break up. Cutting off communication and swerving those DMs for a few weeks totally trumps having to tell that lad you banged that his game is off, or that girl you dated just isn’t doing it for ya.The problem with ghosting is that the negative impacts of it run so much deeper than just hurting someone’s feelings or causing them to rinse their data trying to contact you. Aside from spurring majorly-bummed-out-rejection feels, ghosting leads some people to deeply internalise that rejection, which can have some serious knock-on effects. According to Psychology Today magazine, “ghosting creates the ultimate scenario of ambiguity”, and in fact this kind of social rejection “activates the same pathways in the brain as physical pain.”When we’ve been ghosted, we end up questioning everything about ourselves. Is it the way I look? Or maybe how I am in bed? Did they not like my new haircut? Or am I actually a bad kisser? Did I talk too much about politics, or perhaps not enough? Shit, what if it’s my fashion sense?Although these thoughts and feelings might seem trivial to some, for others ghosting can lead to a dangerous downward spiral of self doubt and cause major damage to self esteem - which in turn can trigger depression and anxiety. In fact mental health professionals have even declared the tactic as a form of emotional cruelty, branding it the ultimate silent treatment. They also said that “people who end relationships by ghosting have often been ghosted themselves, yet seemingly show no empathy toward the other”.With this in mind, why do we continue to ghost people when we know how down right shitty it feels to be on the receiving end of a major swerve?Like I said, we’ve all been ghosted or done some ghosting in our time. I for one will put my hands up and say I’ve defo ignored a text or two in my time. But with so much buzz around mental health and supporting one another right now, shouldn’t we be actively trying to avoid situations that might trigger an unpleasant emotional experience? So, it’s time we said goodbye to ghosting. Ciao. Adios. We’re done.First things first, if you’re old enough to be using online dating apps and services then you should be mature enough to be upfront and honest with a potential partner about the fact that you don’t want to see them again. Moreover, if you liked them enough to have any sort of relationship in the first place (yes texting and meeting up one time counts), then they deserve some basic level of respect on your part. Now I’m not saying you need to send a full on essay or go all he’s-just-not-that-into-you-movie-montage on them, but a lowkey text message saying that you didn’t feel a spark but wish them all the best will do the trick.Another way to avoid ghosting is to be upfront about your dating expectations from the beginning. If you’re only looking for a one night stand and nothing more, then make that clear to avoid any miscommunication and emotional damage down the line. Alternatively, if you’re looking for something more serious, make it known so that you and your potential partner can make sure you’re on the same page, before you find out that you’re actually in totally different books altogether.Yes, being upfront and honest can be a little toe-curling at times, and ofc no-one wants to intentionally hurt someone’s feelings. But it’s time to break the cycle we’ve been a slave to and welcome in a new and honest era of modern dating. So, what better place to practice our first breakup than with ghosting itself? So, next time you’ve got your swerving shoes on and making a beeline for ghost town, take a moment to pause, and send a text instead ;) Written by Jade Biggs.

Could you be our next nail tech?! Find out why working at ISLA is 💯💯

Could you be our next nail tech?! Find out why working at ISLA is 💯💯

Working as a nail tech is just like any other other job right? Wrong! Our nail techs aren't only crazy talented at what they do; they also create the amazing vibe that we are known for at ISLA.  With a kickass team working to give you the best talons in Berlin whilst set to a backdrop of tunes from world renowned DJ's...well, wouldn't you wanna work for us?!  Not only does working as a nail tech or nail artist allow you to express your creativity but also gives you the opportunity to meet amazing people and work on exciting projects.  In an industry that is constantly evolving, working in nails is anything but boring. But less talk and more action.  We spoke with Pia and Maddy from our team to share the inside scoop on what makes working for ISLA so goddamn good! Over to you girls....Pia's been with ISLA for a year now and originally started out in nails as a hobby.  With a love for all things creative and a background in illustration and fashion, her natural creativity transferred well to being a nail artist. How did your journey at ISLA begin? I began doing nails in my spare time as more of a hobby at first and didn't think about the possibility of it being a full time job.  A friend of mine told me about ISLA and suggested I contact them and that's basically how it happened! Did you take any specialist nail courses and do you think it's necessary if you want to be a nail tech?I took a nail technician course to learn the basics such as hygiene, prepping the nails etc which definitely helped but I think at ISLA they really recognise the potential in people over what courses they have done.  If you have a certain talent and are able to give a good manicure, they are really willing to support you in developing your skills.Let's talk more about the team at ISLA - what do you love about it and how have they supported you? There are so many things I love about working here and being part of an all female team is definitely one of them; it feels empowering.  The girls really support each other and were super patient with me when I started and was developing my skills.  It's a really chill, no pressure environment to work in and feels like hanging out with friends more than a job.We love that the girls at ISLA each seem to have their own style.  What would you say is yours?I'm definitely drawn to techy, graphic designs with a kind of Nineties vibe.ISLA often collabs with people for events such as their recent pop up in New York with VFiles.  What have the highlights been for you so far?We had a Nike event in-store which was really cool.  We were doing nails and had brand giveaways so it was a really fun event. And finally, is there a typical ISLA client? The clients I meet really vary and I've done nails for people from the ages of 12 and up so it's a really diverse mix.Check out some of our faves from Pia's work so far: View this post on Instagram A post shared by Kalashnikova Nails (@kkalashnikova_nails) on Oct 28, 2019 at 1:58pm PDT View this post on Instagram A post shared by Kalashnikova Nails (@kkalashnikova_nails) on Oct 17, 2019 at 1:47am PDT Maddy's been with ISLA since 2017 before the store even opened and has seen how the nail art scene has evolved in the past two years.  We chatted to her to get her take on what it's like to work for us and how she discovered ISLA.So you've been with ISLA since the beginning; tell us a bit about your background and what led you to Berlin...I was working as a freelance nail tech in London and hadn't really thought about the possibility of leaving the UK for work.  Charissa (ISLA's founder) was searching for talent at the time and contacted me after seeing some of my work on Instagram and told me about her plans to start up ISLA.  I liked the concept and could see Charissa's drive, passion and determination to succeed so I said I would try it for six months and see what happened.  I haven't looked back!Having been with ISLA from the start, how would you say it has changed/evolved in the last 2 years?Nail art was not really a thing here at first so that is something that has noticeably developed as the scene has grown in Berlin and the demand has increased.  I would say that the kind of brands we carry and the vibe of the store have remained true to how it was in the beginning.  How do you think ISLA grew it's presence and gained it's following within the community? Our popularity definitely increased through social media, particularly our Instagram but word of mouth has also been a really powerful tool.  We've been able to collaborate with some really cool brands such as Converse and Nike through events which has also boosted our profile both in Berlin and internationally. Is there anything you miss about the freelance life? The only thing I missed initially was working on fashion shoots but as ISLA has grown, it has opened up opportunities to be involved in events and shoots plus there's a lot to be said for being part of a team and having consistency.  It feels like being part of a community.Tell us what you think ISLA is looking for in a nail tech...ISLA looks for a nail tech with a good eye and the potential to develop.  Everyone here has learnt something new since they started with us, no matter how much experience they had in the industry beforehand.  There's always room for development and ISLA really supports the team in enhancing their skills.  Would you say ISLA draws a particular crowd? The Berlin crowd obviously varies but we tend to attract the creative type, often between the ages of 18-35 and have a good mix of German and international clients. We're currently loving these designs created by Maddy: View this post on Instagram A post shared by Maddy Ayers (@maadnails) on Oct 15, 2019 at 11:10am PDT View this post on Instagram A post shared by Maddy Ayers (@maadnails) on Oct 7, 2019 at 9:10am PDT THINK YOU'VE GOT WHAT IT TAKES?!If you've got the skills, creativity and have a passion for all things nail related, we want to hear from you!
