Meet our new badass nail artist Grace!!

Meet our new badass nail artist Grace!!

This month we've welcomed a fab new nail tech Grace to our team and we couldn't be more excited to have her as part of the ISLA crew! She's fresh off the plane from Ireland is bringing her insane nail art skills to Berlin. I wasted no time in booking her for a manicure last week to let her loose on my tips which were in need of some serious attention!  I was craving Yayoi Kusama-inspired dots to bring some spring/summer vibes into my life and she didn't disappoint - I'm obsessed with them!So while Grace (known as @booshibishnails on Insta - go check her out!!) got to work on my nails, I quizzed her on how she got into the nail scene, where she gets her inspiration from and what brought her to ISLA!Welcome to the ISLA team! Lets go back to the beginning...how did you get into the nail scene and when did you discover that you had a talent for it?I'd always been into nails as a teenager but had pretty much forgotten about it until I took a trip to Frankfurt a while back to visit some friends and ended up getting my nails done there.  I was never particularly into beauty but after getting my nails done I rediscovered my love for it and became kind of obsessed! As soon as I got back to Limerick I began researching nail courses and it just went from there. View this post on Instagram A post shared by BOOSHI BISH (@booshibishnails) on Mar 4, 2020 at 8:49am PST How's the nail scene in Limerick? Was there much demand for nail art there? Not at all.  I always wanted mad designs for myself and it was when I started searching that I realised there were no options there.  If you wanted detailed designs, you had to go to Dublin so I knew then that this was something I could wanted to change.  I took a nail tech course in March last year to get the basics down with gel and shellac and continued to practice nail art on clients at home in my own time.Wait, you only did your course last year?!  That's insane! You obviously have a natural talent for all things nails; how did you get to where you are now in just a year?!I think when you have a talent for something and are passionate about it, it comes naturally.  I had worked as an event photographer before and am a very visual person so a lot of the skills I had such as composition could also be used for nails.  I was originally doing nails at home 3 days a week alongside my regular job and gradually built up a regular client base.  A lot of girls preferred having their nails done with me at home as it was less intimidating than going into a beauty salon.  My client base grew through word of mouth, Instagram plus through connections I had at the local art college.  As the demand grew, I was able to spend more time doing nails and less time at my second job.   View this post on Instagram A post shared by BOOSHI BISH (@booshibishnails) on Sep 23, 2019 at 5:09am PDT With nail art not being such a big thing in Limerick at the time, did you feel restricted?I definitely had to adopt a different style back at home as people weren't so adventurous but this is definitely changing now, especially with Instagram being such a good source of inspiration and ideas. How would you define your style and who/what inspires your designs?I wouldn't say I have a specific style although maybe to others it seems like I have.  I really like random designs and don't look to any specific nail artists or people for inspiration.  Being such a visual person, I'm often inspired by things I see in day to day life so I guess my style is open to interpretation.  I get ideas from my Instagram feed but I prefer to come up with my own rather than copy others as I think it's more personal and unique. View this post on Instagram A post shared by BOOSHI BISH (@booshibishnails) on Sep 20, 2019 at 8:44am PDT We've been loving your Insta feed to check out some of your work so far.  Tell us more about the name - what's a Booshi Bish?!Whenever I get my nails done I feel like an expensive badass bitch (we agree!!) so I created the name that kind of has the same meaning.  'Booshi' is kind of expensive and 'Bish' for bitch obviously!Yaaasss, we totally agree - there's nothing quite like the feeling of a fresh set of nails!! View this post on Instagram A post shared by BOOSHI BISH (@booshibishnails) on May 24, 2019 at 5:00am PDT So you've been with ISLA a couple of weeks now; what do you love about us?!I love the atmosphere in the store - everyone is so friendly and it's got such a nice  chill vibe.  The customers are such a mad variety of people so I love being such a range of different people and getting an insight into their world. WANNA ADD SOME GRACE TO YOUR TIPS?!Book her now by calling us on  +49 162 9741809 or click here to book online.Written by Hazel Hedges.

Nike Air Max 90 30th Anniversary - They're coming in Pink!

Nike Air Max 90 30th Anniversary - They're coming in Pink!

Do these sneakers really need an introduction...? We didn't think so either! Nike's Air Max 90 is an absolute classic and to mark it's 30th anniversary this month, Nike has launched the style in this gorgeous rose pink colour which has just landed at ISLA! So what do we know about this already iconic shoe? When it first broke out onto the scene in 1990, one of it's most eye-catching features was it's unique Infrared colourway which instantly set it apart from any previous models.  The 'Air' concept itself was nothing new as Nike had already been creating it for other sneakers since the late 70's, but the AM 90 featured the instantly recognisable chunky heel and window for the air bubble which wasn't repeated in later Air Max designs. The AM 90 not only gained a following amongst runners for it's comfort and practicality, but also amongst the skateboarding community and street fashion scene for it's versatility and effortless style.  It's for these reasons why we believe the Nike Air Max 90 is here to stay!     The Nike Air Max 90 is bold, stylish, and a risk taker - all qualities we love and admire within a shoe which is why ISLA couldn't be more excited to be bringing you this super cool design! This new colour way has just hit our store and will no doubt be in high demand as it's a limited run, so we suggest getting your hands on them soon cuz once they're gone, they're gone! What better way to slay your way into 2020 than wearing these badass kickz, are we right?!DON'T MISS OUT!Get your hands on them at the ISLA store or online HERE.  Written by Hazel Hedges.

Here's why that AliExpress deal is too good to be true

Here's why that AliExpress deal is too good to be true

If you’ve spent any time on Facebook or Instagram recently, we’re sure you’ve seen the ads for those low-cost fast-fashion items that just seem too good to be true.Whether it’s a pair of platform sneakers for €10.99, or a handbag for just €7, more often than not these products are knock-offs of independent designers who have worked hard to produce their items.Sites like AliExpress have saturated the market with cheap products that manufacture low-quality replicas of the real deal.“Bolstered by stolen images, aggressive ads, and images of certificates from places like PayPal, the sites regularly sucker consumers into buying clothing straight from China - and it often bears little resemblance to the pictures they saw online” said a report from Buzzfeed.“If and when the garments finally arrive, shoppers say they’re frequently small enough to fit children, their color is off, and they are made from flimsy materials,” the report adds. “Sometimes they smell like chemicals. And, customer service, typically located in China, is barely reachable, especially when it comes to returns and refunds.”But, more importantly, mass produced knock offs like these impact the business of small independent designers whose unique ideas are being stolen. Here at ISLA we recently came across one of our pieces being replicated and sold on the site AliExpress; one of our all-time favourite items, the Pussy Grabs Back Dickini in collaboration with Namilia.Out of curiosity we decided to order the “dickini” and see how the quality compared to the real deal. The photos speak for themselves really, and you can clearly see the difference in quality between the knock off, and the authentic item. Ever heard the saying “you vs the man she tells you not to worry about”, we think you catch our drift!!Remember, next time you see a deal that’s too good to be true, it probably is. So, if you want the real deal, you don’t need to go far, buy the authentic and original Pussy Grabs Back Dickini in-store or online at ISLA.

Looking Back at Some of Our Faves

Looking Back at Some of Our Faves

With most of us deep in quarantine mode at the mo, what better time to sit down with our talented nail artists (virtually obvs) and ask them to take a look back at some of their fave looks. First up, we asked Maddy and Pia to reflect on some of the designs they’ve created since being at ISLA and choose the two that stand out to them the most.…a tough call when you’re the creator of so many inspiring looks!MADDYLOGO LOVEThe first set is from a few years ago, not long before we started ISLA.  4th of July was coming up and I wanted to do some nails to celebrate.  The Golden Arches were obv the first thing that came to mind!  These were done in regular polish (as that's all I had at home).  The smooth lines and symmetry were a killer to achieve with this product, so I was pretty proud of the end result.  This mani got some good press attention and stepped up my obsession with logo nails. We can totally see why these are among your faves and why they got such attention from the press - that detail is insane and totally has us craving a Happy Meal…! MARBLE COLOUR CONTRASTSThe second set is really recent.  I was kinda low that day (during lockdown) and missing home a lot, so was doing nails to keep busy (my go-to distraction!). I was playing around with Blooming Gel and decided to make a long purple set to try out the product.  The colour palette is super cute and I really liked how the colours moved to create the marble.  Plus, purple nails with orange jumper = fire.  I picked this set not because they're the most accomplished nails I've ever done, but because they cheered me up when I needed it.‘This is what people sometimes don't get about a fresh manicure - it can totally change your frame of mind.’ PIASPARKLED TIPSThese were one of the very first premium extensions I did and they turned out so cute! Probably the first time I was really proud of my work.We can totally see why! We’re definitely getting some Sailor Moon vibes from this glittering set - I mean, who wouldn’t be happy to look down at these?! A super impressive first set of premium extensions too, no wonder they made it into your top two! NEON TRIBALI love creating tribal designs as well as butterflies, so combining these with my love of French tips was the whole package for me.  We totally agree, and the lime green gives them that extra pop too - love!! Stay tuned for our next post featuring two more of our amazing nail techs to fuel you with inspo for your next manicure….!WANT TO SEE MORE OF MADDY AND PIA'S LOOKS...?Maddy on Instagram: @maadnailsPia on Instagram: @kkalashnikova_nailsWritten by Hazel Hedges

Moons and Junes - Bras without the bullshit

Moons and Junes - Bras without the bullshit

We love us some lingerie that makes us feel sexy and fierce.  But does sexy also = pain and discomfort? We are SO over suffering for sexiness because we know we can feel and look great without that bullshit... ...which is exactly why lingerie brand Moons and Junes spoke to us.  The brand is all about creating lingerie that accentuates and celebrates our curves, working with them rather than against them which is what so many of us have become used to.Their no B.S. attitude also extends to their ad campaigns which embrace diversity and wait for it; no photoshop! Hallelujah!  It's this refreshing take on lingerie with its emphasis on feeling confident that we absolutely love so we couldn't be happier to have the Moons and Junes range in store - we know you're gonna love it!We recently chatted to the brand founder, Agnete, to find out more about how Moons and Junes came to be... First of all we wanted to start by saying that we are really excited to be stocking the Moons and Junes range at ISLA! For those new to the brand, can you tell us a bit about what inspired you to create an intimates range?Yes of course, and thank you so much! We’re incredibly excited to have ISLA as one of our retailers! Hm…it’s becoming increasingly clear to me that Moons and Junes is a direct result of my own insecurities. Thinking back on my teen years, I (like oh so many others) suffered from low self-esteem and body insecurities. I continuously found myself compromising with myself in order to fit into the socially constructed ideal of beauty. In the midst of my should-I-get-implants phase, I was fortunate enough to take part in a two-year educational program called the United World College (UWC). UWC brings 300 high school students from 95 different countries together. It was a real melting pot of nationality, culture, race, and sexuality. Arriving there as a white, cis, straight, teenage Westerner, it was something of an eye-opener, to put it mildly. Surrounded by bodies of all shapes, colors, and inclinations (yes, we had communal showers), I learned to appreciate the individual beauty each and every one of us embodied. Moons and Junes was born as a celebration of this beauty in diversity.   It was also at this time I started noticing that a lot of my underwear encouraged me to ‘change’ my physical appearance. My bras made by breasts appear bigger, firmer and rounder. I hated it.  On top of that I had a lump surgically removed from my left breasts as the underwire had wrecked havoc over the years, which had created inflammation in my tissue. This is when I noticed how difficult it was to find intimates that were truly comfortable, that didn’t distort my look, that didn’t dig into my skin, that didn’t change my body.  I needed something that put emphasis on my own curves rather than creating 'new' ones, you know? Something that celebrated my individuality, rather than trying to change me.  And so I decided to build my own. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Moons and Junes (@moonsandjunesofficial) on Jan 11, 2020 at 5:36am PST The homepage of your website definitely sets the tone for what customers can expect from you by saying ‘No underwire. No padding. No bullshit.’ Amen to that! It’s so refreshing to see it laid out in such a clear cut, no nonsense way.  Do you think that attitude has helped get you to where you are today and what sets you apart from other lingerie brands?Hm, that’s an interesting question! I think we’re at a time where people are craving something real. We’re tired of having been fed bullshit by male-run lingerie brands, sexualizing our bodies and promoting oppressive standards of beauty, that have somehow managed to become the social norm.  I mean, when we ask why people strive to look a certain way, it becomes fairly obvious that inclusivity is not just about “self-love”, it’s about recognizing oppressive behaviours. That’s why representation is so important: dark, fair, young, old, slim or not, cis or not.  I think it's important that we take responsibility for the beauty-related mandates we promote.    We as consumers are a lot smarter than corporations have made us out to be. We know what we want, and we’re tired of fake shit. As I build MJ,  it is simply a matter of listening and being authentic. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Moons and Junes (@moonsandjunesofficial) on May 25, 2019 at 1:41pm PDT We love that you seem to really value and nurture the connections you have with the Moons and Junes online community through your blog, #bitsandboobs and the diary entries on your website.  Was that something you always intended as part of your vision or has it been something that has evolved organically? Haha, #bitsandboobs actually came long before the brand. When I struggled with my breasts, and I thought my perception of them would improve if I was exposed to more ‘real’ breasts. So I hit up acquaintances/friends to ask them if they wanted to help me out by sending me a picture of their chests. I can’t believe so many of them sent me pictures, it was amazing! And so when Moons and Junes came along, I knew I couldn’t keep all that gold to myself. #bitsandboobs aims at normalizing lumps and bumps by creating a collection of boobs from all over the world. Moons and Junes was never intended to be ‘just’ a product. I always dreamed of us becoming a community, a judgement free zone that could provide your daily dose of realism. And we couldn’t have built any of this if it wasn't for our customers/followers and the incredible support they continuously give us. We currently have a platform where 80% of our content is user generated and where word of mouth is our only advertisement. Instagram (@moonsandjunesofficial)  is a direct communication channel for us to learn who our customers are, what they want - we simply have to listen and provide. Through our Instagram we learned what our community want from their underwear and where we could improve. We’ve been in touch with more than 50 women who’ve helped us out with focus groups and fittings! It’s because of all this assistance and feedback that our new product line has wider straps, larger cups, and I would never have come up with the cute high-waisted pair of briefs on my own.   With beauty being such a constant focus in both media and society as a whole, has it been difficult to try and shift the perception that we must suffer for beauty to the realisation that comfort can also be sexy and beautiful?Yes and no. At the beginning we faced a decent amount of lot of backlash, as multiple bigger corporations thought we were too controversial (how) to work with. But once we found our first customers, who saw our approach as refreshing and who already believed that ‘comfort can be beautiful’, things took a life of their own.  We became a part of a much larger movement happening among women and femme. One that is much greater than any individual or company, and that is gaining ground every single day. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Moons and Junes (@moonsandjunesofficial) on May 5, 2019 at 1:43am PDT Moons and Junes feels like a very open and honest range which, in a world often dominated by a fair amount of bullshit, is hard to come by.  If you could leave a lasting impression on each person that wears your lingerie, what would you hope it to be?Life is hard enough as is it. We’re taught that every accomplishment comes with a struggle. And damn it we struggle a lot! There are so many things that are difficult and uncomfortable. Underwear shouldn't be one of them. That’s it.  I hope people wear them on a sexy Friday night, on a lazy Sunday morning, during important meetings, when practicing yoga, when they see their therapist, when breastfeeding… haha – point being: there are no rules to wearing Moons And Junes. No who, no where, no when.   View this post on Instagram A post shared by Moons and Junes (@moonsandjunesofficial) on Oct 28, 2019 at 3:25am PDT We feel really fortunate to be carrying Moons and Junes at our store in Berlin!  Are you selective about your retailers and what drew you to ISLA?Thank you, we’re incredibly excited about this collaboration too! And to answer your question, yes, we’re definitely nit-picky! We work hard to find partners that align with our values, that have character and that are cool. It’s like going on a first date - was there god chemistry? ISLA had us at hello! It is such a pearl with a strong, fun and quirky aesthetic - we just had to be a part of it!    You launched the brand in 2016 and it seems to be going from strength to strength which is fantastic.  How do you see it evolving over the next year, any exciting plans for 2020…? Our biggest focus is the launch of our long awaited collection, UNAPOLOGETIC. We're launching it on the 8th of March and can't wait to get it out into the world! This collection is different from anything we’ve ever done before, which is nerve-wrecking - in a good way.  It explicitly celebrates female and femme sexuality in all its forms by focusing on the individual. We’re very excited about it. Get your hands on the Moons and Junes range here or come see us in store! Written by Hazel Hedges.
