A History of Nail Art: How did nails become so big?!

A History of Nail Art: How did nails become so big?!

Ever wondered where nail art comes from and why it’s become such an obsession? The days where nails were just an accessory to a look are looooong gone. We’ve waved goodbye to the ‘less is more’ approach - who wants to play it safe anyway? Nail artists have stepped up their game BIG time so now we’re all about showcasing that and letting our talons do the talking! So how did we get to this point where nails became so important? We wanted to know more so delved deep into the nail archives to find out….Manicures actually go waaaay back (like 3000 years back!!) with Queen Nefertiti and Cleopatra being some of the OG’s when it comes to nail art. They added colour to their talons using henna and other plant extract plus a combo of natural oils to moisturise - we love the innovation! Having colourful tips was a sign of wealth and status so even back then it’s clear to see the power of nails. So lets fast forward to the 20th century to a time that we may be a little more familiar with…The 1920’s and 1930’s saw well known brands Cutex and Revlon hitting the shelves.  Their launch of dusky rose and super high lacquer red shades were perfect for rocking the half moon manicures that were taking off at the time thanks to silver screen actresses such as Jean Harlow. Before that they’d been using high-gloss car paint….*insert horrified emoji face here* The '40s and '50s saw a shift in styles with wartime forcing the day to day gal to opt for a more shortened, practical manicure.  In the movies however, the colour red was still a staple although now moving onto a deeper shade and longer with an almond shape as seen on Marlene Dietrich. And may we just say that she is working it! The 1960’s saw big changes in the fashion and beauty industry with people daring to be different and less afraid to make a statement with their outfits.  And OMG the colours! Brands like Mary Quant hit the scene with everything from vibrant yellows to cute candy pastel blues and shades with shimmering pearlescent finishes.  The classic reds and pinks of the past were still there but had met their match in these new statement hues; nails were no longer taking a back seat! With the birth of disco and Studio 54, the power of celebs went up a gear in the '70s with singers like Cher rocking square tipped nails and the French manicure (created by Orly founder Jeff Pink) whilst Diana Ross was loving her long red acrylics.  Colour was still big news but it was also a time of throwbacks with a new found love of deep reds and the moon manicure of the '30s even making a comeback. The '80s were anything but minimal - this was the decade where the phrase ‘more is more’ definitely came into effect! Some serious nail art began to emerge on the hands of celebs and athletes alike - ever seen those super long talons on Olympic runner Flo-Jo?! She was breaking records both on and off the track with those bad boys! With the birth of grunge in the '90s, nails took on a less polished look as seen on the likes of Kurt Cobain and Courtney Love. Suddenly it became ok to have week old, chipped nails - you just had to own it. Darker shades were HUGE, especially after the release of Pulp Fiction which saw Uma Thurman rocking Chanel’s iconic Rouge Noir shade. Such a kick ass look that we still love! A throwback to the ‘90s wouldn’t be legit without recognising the likes of Hip Hop Queens Missy Elliott and Lil’ Kim whose crystal adorned, unapologetically blinged nails set the tone for the entire decade.  Being icons of both music and popular culture, these women (amongst others) became representatives of nail artists at that time and by showcasing their talents, were able to elevate their status giving them the recognition they deserved. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Bernadette Thompson (@bernadettenails) on Nov 19, 2015 at 3:07pm PST Anyone remember this dollar bill set created by celebrity nail technician Bernadette Thompson for Lil' Kim in 1995 - they’re oh so money…!! View this post on Instagram A post shared by Bernadette Thompson (@bernadettenails) on Sep 26, 2017 at 6:07pm PDT The industry as we know it today owes itself largely to the African American innovators of the ‘80s and ‘90s who used nail art as a form of self-expression and had been for decades. Whilst pierced and heavily rhinestoned nails remain current and fresh, the fact is that their origins lie within African American culture and whose aesthetic continues to evolve and inspire us. A couple of our faves are Bianca Williams, aka Beedy, and Teyana Taylor who launched her Harlem-based '90s themed nail salon, Junie Bee Nails in 2018. They are killing it! View this post on Instagram A post shared by Bianca "BEEDY" Williams (@beedy_the_black_nail_tech) on Feb 4, 2020 at 6:11pm PST    View this post on Instagram A post shared by JUNIE BEE NAILS (@juniebeenails) on Dec 26, 2019 at 3:57am PST So that brings us to the 2000’s up until today….where do we start?! This is the era where tech has really come into play, with social media platforms like Instagram and YouTube bringing nail art to a whole new level not to mention a new audience. Through the power of these multimedia tools, nail artists are able to showcase their skills as well as inspire and teach others. With these apps at our disposal, it has made nail artistry so much more accessible; they've now become the go-to for discovering new designs, techniques and talented artists from all over the world. The '80s may have showed us that ‘more is more’ but things have gone waaaay beyond that now - there really are no limits and we are continuously pushing to find the next big thing. Take a look below to see what we mean....next level crazy and we love it! Are you making these nail mistakes?

Are you making these nail mistakes?

If you’re settling in for a night of self-care and your nails are in need of a lil lovin, before grabbing that trusty old nail file of yours, make sure to check out these nail do’s and don’ts...✅Do keep your cuticles moisturised Cuticles, they’re a bit confusing aren’t they - what are they and why do we need them? Well, that soft squidgy lining protects the nail bed from all the bacteria our hands pick up throughout the day. For this reason, unless the cuticles are overgrown or as requested by a client, we opt to push them back rather than cut them away. Keeping your cuticles in good condition, that means moisturising on the reg with cuticle oil, will prevent them from cracking and peeling which can lead to nail bed damage. 🚫Don’t bite your nails Nail biting is an addictively bad habit that can be a nightmare to break. Not only does nail biting cause damage to the nail bed, but it also exposes you to all the bacteria that’s hiding up under your nails.✅Do take vitamins to keep your nails on fleek Many of us suffer from naturally weak or brittle nails, but that doesn’t mean we’ve got to live with it. There are plenty of supplements you can take to promote healthy nail growth including Vitamin B12, Iron, and Folic Acid. 🚫Don’t skip the base coat When giving yourself an at home mani it’s tempting to skip the base coat and go straight to the colour, but this can discolour your nails and shorten the lifespan of your manicure.  ✅Do apply a top coat, as well as that trusty base coat The secret to a long lasting manicure is to seal the colour with a high quality top coat, our favourite is Seche Vite which we use in-store. 🚫Don’t peel off your polish or Shellac Just like nail biting, it can be oh-so-tempting to start picking away at your Shellac once it starts to lift. But this removes layers of your actual nail and can cause long-lasting damage, so it’s best to head back to the salon to get a proper removal.✅Do book in for the real thing Speaking of Shellac, make sure you book into a salon that’s using the real deal, just like we do here at ISLA. With its rise in popularity, Shellac has become somewhat of an umbrella term for all gel manicures - but that’s not the case. Many salons which claim to be using Shellac are actually using poor knock offs which aren’t healthy for your nails. Your manicurist should only be using high quality gel products, such as CND or Gel Bottle, plus a UV lamp. 🚫Don’t allow electric nail files to be used on your gel manicure Electric nail files are bad news for your nails and can leave lasting damage that can take a long time to repair. You won’t find any electric files here at ISLA, we do all our work by hand, ensuring to protect your nails and promote healthy growth. For more information see our story highlights over on Instagram.✅Do consider how your diet is affecting your nails Our diet affects everything from the way we look to the way we feel. That includes our nails too, and there are plenty of ways to tell how your diet is impacting the health of your nails. Very pale nails point to anaemia which means you need to increase your iron intake, whilst nails that break easy could be a result of a calcium deficiency. Still got some nail related questions? Slide into our DM’s over on the ISLA Instagram and we’ll be happy to answer! Don’t forget, here at ISLA we only use the very best quality products and our nail techs are trained to give your nails the extra TLC they need to promote healthy growth and keep those talons in top condition.

A look at cult 90s label X-girl

A look at cult 90s label X-girl

What happens when you mix one part fashion student, and one part synth pop star? Cult label X-girl was born in 1994, founded by stylist Daisy von Furth and Sonic Youth’s Kim Gordon. “Back in the 90s, you weren’t cool if you weren’t wearing X-girl” says Dazed magazine’s Morgan Nyfeler, “with its logo t-shirts, A-line dresses and androgynous look, the brand established itself as the go-to for skater girls.” Kim and Daisy designed clothes that they wanted to wear and the label was considered to be “a pioneer of the ‘girls movement’ in the fashion industry.” They wanted “something that was really of the moment” said X-girl pattern maker Wendy Mullin, “at the time, ‘girl power’ was coming out and this idea of ‘anything boys can do, girls can do better’.” “It was really part of that early 90s feminist thing happening” said Wendy. Reminiscing about the brand, Vogue’s Rebecca Johnson said “it was the gateway fashion drug for 90s girls like me who were anti-establishment, anti-mainstream, anti-consumer, strictly secondhand, skate-schooled, reared on DIY ethics, on punk, hip-hop, with a shot of indie rock.” In 1998 the brand was bought out by a Japanese company, and fast forward 20 years later X-girl continues to churn out cult-classic looks “inspired by rock, military, outdoor, sports and many other street culture factors.”With the growing reemergence of cult 90s clothing, blended with the iconic styles of the y2k era, the X-Girl look is back on trend. The brand’s most recent collections ooze punk girl power, and add just the right amount of 90s feminist aesthetic to any look. Some of our fave pieces are the X-Girl Plaid Skirt, X-Girl Wide Jacket with Big Pockets, X-Girl Flowing Earclips and the X-Girl Desert Camo Pants. Check out the X-girl lookbook below and shop the brand instore and online at ISLA.

Who's that X-girl?

Who's that X-girl?

Remember that cult female clothing brand X-girl from the Nineties made cool by the likes of Chloë Sevigny?Well they’re back (or maybe they never left...?) and we are one of the few exclusive stores outside of Asia and the States carrying the brand. What gives X-girl their edge and why do we at ISLA love it?  The brand represents unapologetic individuals with attitude and we are ALL about that. Take @pyn0504 for example; she works in X-girl's Harajuku store and her regular #xgirl updates via her 'gram have transformed her into a fashion powerhouse of the people.  With a growing fanbase looking to her for style inspiration, who are we to argue?  Our very own Charissa recently took a trip to Japan and visited the X-girl store in Tokyo to explore how the brand continues to evolve and inspire the girls of Harajuku and beyond.  The in-store vibe was heavily influenced by the skate scene with a particular shout out to a group of NYC based female skateboarders called ‘The Skate Kitchen’.  Check out their collab with X-girl here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NV91EoA1S_0In a culture often driven by all things ‘kawaii’ (cute), in Japan X-girl stands out from the crowd by appealing to the rebel girl, the one who dares to be different.  With hashtags like #xgirl_ootd and #xgirljp trending over on Instagram, it doesn't look like their popularity is due to fade anytime soon. We think X-girl is a badass brand and we owe it to the ISLA crew to share it with you because we know you get it.To shop X-Girl at ISLA check out our store or visit us online at:   https://islaberlin.com/collections/vendors?q=X-GIRLX-Girl on Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/xgirljp/?hl=enCheck out their SS19 Lookbook:https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCtkWPobPgrpuUpNLU7KJTXwSkate Kitchen NYC:https://www.dazeddigital.com/projects/article/35360/1/the-skate-kitchen-collectives-biography-dazed-100-profile Written by Hazel Hedges

Why every woman needs a rose quartz pleasure wand

Why every woman needs a rose quartz pleasure wand

When it comes to sex toys, how can we make sure our vagina is feeling as good as we are? There’s a lot to consider when choosing a sex toy, size, shape, vibration, the list is endless really. But what about combining our physical pleasure with our spiritual side too? Cue the new must-have on the sex scene, a rose quartz pleasure wand. Rose quartz is the crystal of the heart and channels unconditional love. Healers use it to promote self-love and confidence, as well as attracting and promoting sexual pleasure and romance. So, what better way to provide your pussy with a little loving than a rose quartz pleasure wand? 100% natural, with no chemicals and no nasties, the wand is energetically charged, providing more than just a sexual feeling, but a spiritual one too. Better yet, unlike standard silicone toys which degrade overtime, the all-natural crystal stone lasts a lifetime, so you can enjoy your pleasure wand again and again and again.Using your rose quartz pleasure wand, you’ll feel overwhelmed with a higher level of consciousness in your vagina, love life, body and self. This powerful dildo allows you to connect to your pleasure instincts, and with yourself on a new level of intimacy, not to mention it looks really cute on your bedside cabinet too.  The rose quartz pleasure wand is about more than just sex. Use it in your daily life as part of your spiritual routine to achieve more self-confidence and feelings of body-positivity. Vanessa Cuccia, author of the book ‘Crystal Healing and Sacred Pleasure’ says “crystals are energy amplifiers. When you open yourself up to sensing the subtle vibration of crystals, you can sensitise yourself to feeling pleasure more intensely.” Make sure to clean your crystal after every use by giving it a wipe over with some sex toy cleaning fluid and warm water. And, don’t forget to charge your wand every full moon to get the most out of its healing powers. All you have to do is leave it out overnight on a windowsill, bathed in plenty of moonlight. You can even recite a charging spell while cleansing your crystal to enhance its powers. So, what are you waiting for? Cancel your plans and set yourself up for a night of steamy, spiritual self-love. When it comes to using your pleasure wand, setting the mood is key, run yourself a bubble bath, slap on a face mask, and let your stresses melt away. Once you’re feeling suitably serene, it’s time to get personal with your pleasure wand. Buy yours in store along with the limited edition ISLA Thong and Namilia Labia of Love Coin Purse.
